China: Citi Announces Grant to Expand Fudan-Citi Small & Medium Enterprise Senior Management Training Program
Shanghai Citibank (China) Co. Ltd. announced today a new grant of RMB 3,150,000 towards the Fudan-Citi Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Senior Management Training Program, conducted in partnership with the Management School of Fudan University. The program is the first of its kind in China providing formal training to senior executives of SMEs free of charge. The new funding from the Citi Foundation follows an initial grant of RMB 1,155,000 made in 2006 to start the program. Since its launch, the program has provided training to more than 700 executives from Chinese SMEs through various forms, including lectures and forums.
Mr. Henry Zhang, Executive Vice President of Citibank (China) Co., Ltd. and General Manager of Commercial Relationship Banking Group, China, said, "Citi is strongly committed to taking a leadership role in supporting the ongoing development of SMEs in China. We not only tailor financial solutions for Chinese enterprises based on our global reach and professional expertise, but we are also investing to facilitate the growth of the SME sector itself. We are delighted to be expanding this program in partnership with Fudan University, which will be an important driver in promoting the healthy development of the sector."
Mr. Huang Lihua, Party's Secretary General of the Management School of Fudan University noted, " We are excited to launch such a pioneering program with Citi to fuel the growth of Chinese SMEs. We expect that these executives will put what they have learnt from the courses into practice, and in doing so, bring their companies to the next level of growth."
In addition to courses such as Strategy and Management, Corporate Governance, Marketing, Human Resources, Legal and Finance, this year's program introduces important new topics, including "Corporate Development and Environmental Protection" and "Sustainable Growth and SME's." These subjects aim to enhance understanding by Chinese SMEs executives of key environmental and sustainability issues associated with enterprise development.
A class of 50 executives took part in the 2007 Fudan-Citi SME Senior Management Training Program, mainly from the Yangtze River Delta region, including Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu. As part of the program, two Fudan-Citi Entrepreneurs Forums were held in Shanghai and Hangzhou, each attended by more than 300 entrepreneurs to discuss the current development of SMEs in China and strategies to grow the sector in future.
One participant was Mr. Zhang Fengchun, Chairman of two logistics and electronic companies in Shanghai, who noted, "I believe that SMEs are in a strong position to contribute to local communities. The logistics business in China has developed at a rapid pace in recent years, however there is relatively little experienced management in this sector. The Citi-Fudan program has inspired me to provide training opportunities for my managers so they can contribute to the healthy development of the logistics sector in China."
To meet high demand for the training, the 2008 program will see a 20% increase in the number of participants undertaking the course. It also will extend the reach for potential students to the Pearl River Delta region, another key manufacturing center in Southern China.
