Lebanon: Citi Foundation Supports Université Saint Joseph
Provides USD 15,000 to School of Business Administration & Management
Beirut Université Saint Joseph (USJ) announced today that it has received a USD 15,000 grant from the Citi Foundation towards USJ's financial aid program for the 2007-2008 academic year. This comes at the heels of another grant for USD 15,000, provided to USJ by the Citi Foundation in 2006-2007.
Just as in 2006, the 2007 grant will be used to cover around 25% of the tuition fee for eight high achieving students from low income families pursuing their studies at the School of Business Administration and Management throughout the 2007-2008 academic year.
"We applaud Citi's continuing commitment to the Lebanese community through financing the education of students who otherwise would be restricted from pursuing a degree to obtain the qualifications necessary to secure a solid future due to strained finances," said Carmel Ghafari Wakim, USJ's Director of Social Service. "This donation will enhance the ability of USJ to deliver financial aid to a growing population of needy students given the difficulty economic environment facing Lebanon today," she added.
Walter Siouffi, General Manager for Citi in Lebanon, said: "Our support for the USJ scholarship program underscores Citi's commitment to supporting financial education in Lebanon and to help today's generation position themselves for a better future. We are proud to be associated with USJ and look forward to partnering with the university in other strategic initiatives."
USJ is one of the oldest and most reputable academic institutions in Lebanon. The university attracts a wide mix of students from various ethnic and religious backgrounds, as well as a number of foreign students from all over the Middle East and North Africa region. It has around 11,000 students across the university's four campuses in Beyrouth, and three regional centers in Bekaa, north and south of Lebanon.
Citi's presence in Lebanon dates back to the 1950s. Since re-establishing its fully licensed branch in Beirut over twelve years ago, the bank has evolved into an active corporate citizen, with a particular interest in supporting financial literacy and education.
Recently, Citi and the Citi Foundation announced a ten-year, $200 million global financial education commitment, the formation of a new Office of Financial Education and a global initiative designed to encourage its over 300,000 employees around the world to devote time to support financial education and other charitable causes. Under the new initiative, employees may take a day off from work to volunteer for non-profit organizations in their communities.
