Guam: Citi Foundation Backs High School e-Learning and Reading Program

Guam – A USD 20,600 grant from the Citi Foundation is supporting an educational outreach program run by St John's School (SJS) with the Guam Public School System.

The grant has been used to purchase 52 portable electronic reader units for the SJS initiative. The George Washington High School (GWHS), the first school to be involved in the outreach program, will use 15 of these units.

Associate Superintendent of Education, Eloise R. Sanchez said, "We are very excited about this opportunity to provide our students with new technology and formats for reading and research projects, especially in the library where students spend most of their time."

George A. Borja, Acting Principal, GWHS added, "We would like to thank the Citi Foundation for their generosity and St. John's School for launching their pilot project at George Washington High School. Our students are very eager to use this portable reader system."

St. John's School, R. Andrew Kerr, Education Consultant and a volunteer with the Episcopal Church in Micronesia (ECIM) said, "Through this project our students and a school librarian will help their counterparts at George Washington High School to research ebooks and other resources, and load them into their reader units. This is a great opportunity for both to strengthen their computer skills, as well as literacy and reading comprehension."

Madhu Seshadri, Corporate Country Officer/Country Business Manager, Citi Guam said this initiative was a good example of technology making a difference to the education system.

"Educating the next generation is a priority at Citi because it allows our youth to make wise choices and attain financial success in the future. Citi is committed to continuing our support to bring technology, education, and financial literacy to our youth."

The portable reader units can hold up to 500 ebooks. With these, school libraries can offer an electronic collection of titles that are either not available in print or are too costly to purchase.

ECIM volunteers, St. John's staff and the Guam Public School System will continue training librarians and distributing the rest of the portable reader units to the middle school and elementary levels.
