Citi Announces Major New Grant of US$1.24 Million to Expand Support of Financial IT Education in China
Shanghai Citi China today unveiled a major new grant of US$1.24 million in support of Citi's Financial Information Technology ("IT") Education Program in China. The program, launched in 2004 with an initial grant from the Citi Foundation of $630,000, is the first in China that specializes in encouraging and cultivating talent in the financial IT profession. The new grant will be made across three years from 2007 to 2009.
Mr. Richard Stanley, Chief Executive Officer, Citi China, said, "Technology is a fundamental driver of financial innovation. A healthy IT sector that can support the evolving needs of China's banking sector is crucial to both the banking sector and the greater economy. We are delighted to be able to continue and expand the Citi Financial IT Education Program. We expect it will help attract the best and brightest talent to this field, and ensure that China has a vibrant IT sector that supports the ongoing success of its financial services sector."
To date, Citi has invested US$760,000 in the program, reaching teachers and students in the areas of finance, management, software, and computer science in more than 30 respected universities. The Citi Financial IT Education Program consists of three main elements: scholarships and fellowships for students and teachers, a mainframe-training program and a software competition.
Since its inception, the program has enjoyed great success. In the past three years, the scholarship and fellowship and mainframe training program have benefited more than 1,000 teachers and students. The software competition, with a focus on the value that IT brings to the financial industry, attracts more than 1,500 students each year. Selections of award winning entries from the competition have been shown at Cebit Asia 2007 and the Global IT Outsourcing Summit 2007 Shanghai, to great acclaim and interest. The mainframe training initiative runs in three universities; Beijing University, Fudan University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
Recognizing the imperative to support the ongoing strengthening of financial IT resources in China, the Citi Foundation has expanded its support for the Citi Financial IT Education Program. In addition to the existing programs, the new grant will allow the introduction of three new initiatives. The first of these will see financial support given to allow Beijing University to establish a financial information-engineering department. The program will be the first in the Chinese education system that combines practical business knowledge, especially banking knowledge, with IT education and it is to be jointly run by industry representatives from financial services and technology sectors and academia.
Second, the new fund will support the foundation of a Financial IT Security Study and Practice Center at Fudan University. The center will place a focus on topics that relate to financial IT security, including new technology usage, possible risks associated with existing technology, technology trends in the financial services industry and testing of secure cryptographic systems designed for specific financial industry needs. Most importantly, the center will provide students with opportunities to put their technology knowledge into practice.
Finally, the grant will help to launch a "train-the-trainer" program at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics. Every year, two training sessions, each at two weeks' long, will be organized for IT teachers from the twenty universities that are participating Citi's education program. Training will be in the form of classroom lectures, as well as through visits to banks and software centers so as for teachers to gain practical insights and experiences. The training curriculum will be based around a new book called "Basic Banking Knowledge," which will be developed by Southwest University of Finance and Economic, Sichuan University and Xi'an, Jiaotong University.
