Citi China Microentrepreneurship Award Winners Announced in Beijing
Beijing Citibank (China) Co. Ltd. ("Citi") and the China Banking Association today announced the winners of the third annual Microentrepreneurship Awards in China. The awards recognize and support the entrepreneurial skills and contribution of China's most outstanding microentrepreneurs, and raise awareness of the power of microfinance to build prosperity.
This year a total of 198 applications for the awards were received from around China. After several rounds of screening and field trip interviews, a total of 107 participants were selected as winners across seven categories and three special awards.
Mdm. Wu Xiaoling, Vice Governor of People's Bank of China said: "The facts tell us that microfinance is such a powerful mechanism for empowerment and poverty reduction because it unleashes the drive of the poor to improve their own lives and grow out of deprivation. We should create and provide an environment that fosters the healthy development of microfinance. We should establish a financial inclusion system that provides financial services to all walks of life and that promotes the development of a harmonious society."
Mr. Richard Stanley, Chairman of Citibank (China) Co. The 2007 awards were announced at a ceremony held at the Media Center in Beijing. T he ceremony was attended by Mme. Wu Xiaoling, Vice Governor of People's of Bank of China, Mr. Richard Stanley, Chairman of Citibank (China) Co. Ltd. and CEO of Citi China, Mr. Jiao Jingpu, Deputy Director General, Research Bureau of People's Bank of China, Mr. Guo Jing, Secretary General, China Banking Association, China Banking Association, Ms. Wang Weili, Deputy Director General, China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges, Ministry of Commerce, and Mr. Mao Yushi, renowned economist.
Prizes were awarded according to the following categories: Rural Agriculture and Animal Husbandry; Rural Non-Agricultural; Urban Trade; Urban Processing; Urban Services; Urban Loan Officer; and Rural Loan Officer. A number of special prizes were given, including those for Most Innovative Microentrepreneur and the most outstanding Environmental Microentrepreneur as well as a prize to the Microentrepreneur that had done most to help less advantaged individuals to improve their lives.
The 2007 awards were facilitated by a multi-member team led by the China Banking Association and Citi, and also involved: the China Association of Microfinance [CAM-Rural Development Institute (RDI)/CASS; China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE)/Ministry of Commerce, and the Department of Women's Development of All-China Women's Federation]; China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation; Employment and Training Department of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and The China CMA Student Alliance.
The Awards were also supported by an Advisory Council, whose distinguished members include: Mdm. Wu Xiaoling, Vice Governor of PBOC, Mr. Yi Xiaozhun, Vice Minister, Ministry of Commerce, Ms. Zhen Yan, Secretary General of All-China Women's Federation, Mr. Mao Yushi, renowned economist, Mr. Wu Jinglian, Renowned Economist, and Mr. Renaud Meyer, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative.
After more than seven months, the final winners were selected by a Judging Committee consisting of several eminent dignitaries in Chinese microcredit, including:

Citi is one of the leading corporate supporters of microfinance and microenterprise development in China. In 2004, Citi made a US$1.5 million grant to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences to help establish the China Microfinance Training Center and the China Association of Microfinance. The Citi Foundation-funded China Microfinance Training Center aims to support the sustainable development of the Chinese microfinance sector by providing systematic and practical training courses to microfinance practitioners in China. The training center will train more than 1,000 management and staff from Microfinance Institutions by 2009 and the association is providing a knowledge and information hub to support the development of the microfinance sector in China.

The China Banking Association (CBA)
The China Banking Association (CBA) is a national banking self-governing organization and is a non-profit institutional legal entity registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs with the approval of the China Banking Regulatory Commission.
