Citi Foundation Presents $170,000 Grant to National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development

Hawaii – Citi and the Citi Foundation announced a grant of $170,000 to the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (CAPACD) today during a conference of National CAPACD and the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement.

"We are proud to be part of the community development effort in building sustainable communities across the nation. Through innovative programs such as the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Communities Taking Initiative in Our Neighborhoods (ACTION) funded by Citi, we are able to help local organizations build their capacity to better meet the needs of the residents in their communities," said Wendy Takahisa, Managing Director, Citi Global Compliance Programs.

The $170,000 grant from the Citi Foundation made to National CAPACD supports the ACTION program. The grant will help build a national infrastructure for AAPI community based organizations through services that provide technical assistance and training in programs such as affordable housing, homeownership and community planning.

"Citi's support has helped National CAPACD build one of the most effective programs in our organizational history. Through ACTION, National CAPACD has helped local community based organizations impact 11,000 people in nine cities across the country, leverage $1.25 million in funding, build 32 units of Senior Housing, create national networks around youth development, and support homeownership among Asian Americans," said Lisa Hasegawa, Executive Director of National CAPACD.

"As an ACTION participant, our organization was able to develop the Homestead Individual Development Account (HIDA), which is helping many Native Hawaiians start saving for a home purchase across the state. We were also able to assist a small but important nonprofit, Hawaiian Community Assets (HCA) to significantly increase homeownership education services from hundreds of families to reaching thousands over a 20-month period of time," said Robin Danner, President of the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement.

National CAPACD is a member-based network of more than 100 community-based organizations and individuals who have joined together since 1999 to impact public policy, leverage resources, and garner support on issues affecting low-income AAPIs. The network includes community development corporations, preservation agencies, social service providers and advocacy groups, as well as national intermediaries and financial institutions. Working in 17 states, National CAPACD members implement innovative affordable housing, community development and community organizing strategies to improve the wellbeing of low-income AAPI communities.
