J. Henry Schröder & Co. is founded in London. As international trade grows in the next decade, the firm's business as guarantor of bills of exchange thrives. The guaranteeing of bills of exchange comes to be known as merchant banking.

1962
Merges with Helbert, Wagg & Co. (established 1823). The name is changed to J. Henry Schroder Wagg & Co. Ltd.
1986
Acquires 50 percent ownership of Wertheim & Co. (established 1927). The name is changed to Wertheim Schroder & Co.
1994
Acquires the remaining 50 percent ownership in Wertheim Schroder & Co. The name is later changed to Schroder & Co. Inc.
2000
Citigroup acquires the investment-banking subsidiary of Schroders PLC and merges it with Salomon Smith Barney to establish Schroder Salomon Smith Barney in the European market.
2003
April 7: Citigroup renames Salomon Smith Barney, and by extension Schroder Salomon Smith Barney, Citigroup Global Markets Limited.
